BornFree® Moms Making a Difference: Shower of Hope

On Tuesday, May 24, 2011, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes ravaged Oklahoma.  My little family of four was tucked away in a closet and listened to the radio for weather updates as the rain and wind pounded our home.  We were blessed and fortunate enough to miss the tornadoes.  Shortly after the storm had passed, my husband and I tucked our two little boys (9-months and 2-years old) in bed, said bedtime prayers and watched our little ones fall asleep.  We were all safe and sound.

Many Oklahoma families lost their homes and possession because of these horrific storms.  Many communities were left beaten and bruised.  One Oklahoma family though seemed to suffer the greatest loss.  Hank and Catherine Hamil had 3 beautiful, precious children: Cathleen, 5-years-old; Ryan, 3-years old; and Cole, 15-months old.  Catherine Hamil is also pregnant and is expecting a baby girl this fall.  Tragically, both of the Hamil’s precious baby boys lost their lives during the tornado.  Catherine and Cathleen spent many days in the hospital recovering from injuries they sustained from the tornado ripping through their home.

When I heard about the Hamil’s tragic story, I was left heartbroken.  As a mommy, I can’t even begin to imagine the immense pain and loss Catherine is experiencing. I felt stirred to do something.  I felt compelled.  I had to act.  I created “Shower of Hope Oklahoma – Hamil Family” as a way to personally reach out and help this family.  I wanted to bless Catherine and her unborn baby girl with baby and toddler items.  I started with a Facebook page, created a blog and started a Twitter account.  I wanted to spread the word any way possible.  The outpouring of love, support and generosity has been overwhelming.  2nd Corinthians 9:7 says, “God loves a cheerful giver”.  Every company, family and individual who has given to Shower of Hope Oklahoma – Hamil Family has demonstrated that cheerfulness.

We are still collecting donations and accepting care packages for the Hamil Family.  There is no donation too small.  From a pack of pacifiers for the Hamil’s unborn baby girl, to markers, crayons and coloring books for the Hamil’s 5-year old daughter.  Everything is greatly appreciated.  Please visit our Facebook page, Twitter page and blog for details on how you can donate to the Hamil Family!   Thank you to the continued support and prayers!
